ALUMINUM PRINTS

HOW IS AN ALUMINUM PRINT MADE?

Every piece goes through a meticulous process and is individually handled and carefully inspected to ensure the highest quality. Archival ink turns into gas and is pressed into the aluminum panel through the perfect combination of high pressure and heat. This process, called dye sublimation, infuses the ink into the aluminum panel. The aluminum panel is then left to cool trapping the ink and solidifying its permanence.

The infused bond between ink and metal produces prints resistant to scratches, chemicals, fading, warping, and cracking.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ALUMINUM PRINTS?

For infused aluminum prints, we offer both white aluminum and brushed aluminum to appeal to every artists vision! White aluminum will show the true color of the photo or art. Brushed aluminum will not show the true color, but will have a metallic sheen, making it interact more with the light.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT FINISHES FOR ALUMINUM PRINTS?

We spent a lot of time researching the best finish for our aluminum prints. For infused aluminum prints, we offer both gloss and matte to appeal to every artists vision!

ACRYLIC PRINTS

WHAT COMES WITH THE CUSTOM ACRYLIC PRINT PACKAGE?

When building your acrylic print, you will choose the face thickness (1/8", 1/4", or 1/2"), acrylic type (clear glass or non-glare), type of photo paper (gloss or metallic), and type of hanging cleat (none, silver or black). These prints will come to you polished to perfection and ready to hang.

WHAT IS ACRYLIC?

Acrylic (otherwise known as plexiglass, acrylic glass, or plex) is a type of shatter-resistant glass. Acrylic sheets are used for a wide range of applications, including:

  • Photographic framing

  • Skylights

  • Retail signage

  • Bulletproof windows

  • Furniture

  • Packaging/retail display holders

When purchasing acrylic, it is important to understand to final use to determine the best type of acrylic. For example, extruded acrylic and cast acrylic may appear to be a similar finished product, but they are manufactured and used very differently. For acrylic face mounts, we only use the highest quality, frame-grade acrylics for the optical clarity, consistency, and durability that your artwork deserves. Using the best quality and best type of acrylic guarantees every print we create remains vibrant and flat on the wall with the desired glass-like appearance.

HOW DO I PROPERLY MAINTAIN AND CLEAN MY ACRYLIC PRINTS?

To prevent damage to your artwork, we recommend that you properly install, maintain, and care for your acrylic print. Avoid scratches - keep sharp or hard objects away from your print. For increased longevity, avoid installing your print in direct sunlight or in high-humidity areas like bathrooms. When cleaning your acrylic print, use a damp, soft cloth to gently wipe the surfaces. Use a very small amount of water on the cloth when wiping down the edges to prevent water from seeping into the paint. Acrylic prints, when maintained correctly, will be enjoyed for generations.

SHOULD A CUSTOM ACRYLIC PRINT BE FRAMED?

Acrylic prints do not require a frame. In face, your acrylic print will look amazing without a frame just as much as it would with a frame. Many people choose an unframed acrylic for a modern or minimalist style as the picture seamlessly floats off of the wall.

WHAT IS A CUSTOM ACRYLIC PHOTO BLOCK?

Custom acrylic blocks are smaller acrylic prints - usually about 3"x3" square - that are typically set on a surface, like a table or desk, instead of hung on a wall. These prints will stand flat on any surface without a stand or cleat. Acrylic blocks are a popular choice that add elegance to your home or office decor. The recommended thickness for an acrylic photo block is 1" with an 1/8" acrylic backer.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ACRYLIC PRINTS AVAILABLE?

Acrylic prints come in a variety of styles, sizes, and types. The two most popular print styles are Face Mounted Acrylic Prints and UV Direct Acrylic Prints.

FACE MOUNTED ACRYLIC PRINTS

Custom face mounted acrylic prints are made by printing an image onto high quality, archival photo paper, which is then pressure bonded to the back of a clear acrylic sheet (choose from clear gloss or non-glare with additional thickness options such as 1/8", 1/4" or 1/2"). The acrylic sheet provides a sleep finished look and gives the photo added dimension and protection. The face mounted acrylic then can be finished with a variety of backers (such as dibond aluminum, acrylic, or sintra) and hanging hardware options. This makes for an extremely high quality, photorealistic print that looks amazing on any wall. Face mounted acrylic is the go-to for most photographers and their most discerning clients.

UV DIRECT ACRYLIC PRINTS

UV direct acrylic is a process in which a photo is printed directly on acrylic using advanced printing technologies. This style introduces the ability to create clear/blank areas in the print as well as adding white inks. While generally used for retail signage or wall art installations, UV direct is a great option for certain photos. UV direct offers durability (indoor and outdoor) as well as more flexibility in print styles. These prints are generally hung using stand-offs to float off the wall.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GLOSS AND METALLIC ACRYLIC PRINTS?

Gloss photo paper offers beautiful, vibrant colors with a true white point, so colors are seen as they were intended. Prolab Digital uses the highest quality photo paper for optimal depth and brightest whites.

Metallic photo paper adds a subtle yet eye-catching iridescence to your photo. When you view the photo from different angles, the changing reflection of light emphasizes different parts of your composition, creating a beautiful and engaging interaction. White/blank areas will appear to have a silver tint, so colors will not appear as intended. Metallic paper is suggested for photos that have deep, saturated colors.

CANVAS PRINTS

SHOULD A CANVAS PRINT BE FRAMED?

Canvas prints look amazing with or without a frame. Our 1.5" thick stretcher bars create a sophisticated floating effect so your frameless print can speak for itself in any indoor environment.

DOES A CANVAS PRINT FADE?

We can't say the same for other companies, but our canvas material and inks are rated to last over 100 years indoors. We use the highest quality archival inks and the thickest acid-free, artist-grade canvas that money can buy.

WHAT IS A MIRRORED CANVAS?

A mirrored canvas can also be called a mirrored edge or a mirrored wrap. A mirrored canvas is one of the more popular effects in canvas wrapping (particularly with photographs), where the last one to two inches (depending on the depth of the stretcher bars used) of the image are "mirrored" and wrapped over the stretcher bars to create a seamless appearance on all the sides of the canvas. Mirroring, instead of simply stretching the image itself and wrapping it, creates and eye-catching reflection-like effect and ensures that no portion of the image is lost on the front side of the canvas. In contrast, classically stretched canvases take a portion of the original image and continue it around the sides.

WHAT IS A STRETCHED CANVAS?

A stretched or image-wrapped canvas is when the image wraps around the sides of the canvas. This effect, while providing a seamless continuation in color and composition around the wrapped edges, causes you to lose a portion of the image on the front side of the canvas (approximately one to two inches, depending on the stretcher's width bar).

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STRETCHED AND UNSTRETCHED/ROLLED CANVASES?

A stretched canvas print means that the image has been wrapped around the edge of a custom-sized wood frame, while an unstretched or rolled canvas picture print is simply the image printed on a flat canvas without the frame. Typically, customers that choose a rolled canvas want to make their own frame or ship their art. However, if that is not the case, we recommend the stretched canvas print option as your artwork arrives professionally finished and ready to hang on the wall immediately.

WHAT IS A PANORAMIC CANVAS PHOTO PRINT?

A panoramic canvas is a beautiful canvas print displaying a wide-format photo. These prints have the ability to transport you with stunning, sweeping color, making them perfect for displaying landscapes, cityscapes, and many other styles of art. They work best in open areas such as over a sofa, fireplace, or bed.
